An interview with Dobromir Mashev
When Dobromir Mashev returned to Bulgaria in 2023, he was not just coming back to his homeland, but to a country rich in breathtaking nature, deep-rooted traditions, and a cultural heritage closely tied to the natural world. However, he saw a troubling paradox: while Bulgaria's landscapes and traditions celebrate nature, modern construction practices were increasingly disregarding it. The appreciation for natural materials had diminished, replaced by synthetic alternatives that harm both people and the environment. This imbalance called for a change.
With over 20 years of international experience and as the first certified geobiologist in the Balkans, Mashev, together with like-minded individuals, founded Sevarex – a company dedicated to promoting natural, sustainable building materials. Their mission was to restore the value of eco-friendly construction methods and advocate for healthier, environmentally responsible architecture. Today, more and more people are rediscovering the benefits of building with clay, wood, lime, hemp, and straw – materials that offer not just durability but also a more harmonious and health-conscious way of living.
What inspired you to focus on sustainable building?
Bulgaria is a unique country, blessed with breathtaking landscapes and an abundance of nature that inspires and energizes those who recognize its value. Our traditions have always been closely tied to the land, and for centuries, people here lived in harmony with their surroundings. However, in recent years, modern construction has shifted away from these principles, often disregarding the benefits of natural materials.

For me, it was clear that if we want to live healthier, we must cooperate with nature, not work against it. Across many European countries, this has already become a major focus in construction and urban planning. With my professional experience and knowledge, I felt a strong responsibility to share these insights with the people of my homeland and help bring about a shift toward more sustainable and responsible building practices. Our homes are more than just buildings; they are the very spaces where we find comfort, security, and renewal. The materials we surround ourselves with shape not only the air we breathe but also the energy efficiency and overall ambiance of our living environments. By choosing natural, non-toxic materials, we are not only investing in our own well-being but also fostering a deeper connection with nature while reducing our ecological footprint.
What makes Sevarex unique in the field of sustainable construction?
What sets Sevarex apart is our holistic approach to sustainable construction. We don't just offer materials; we provide expert guidance, tailored solutions, and a deep understanding of how to harmonize nature with modern living. Our strength lies in bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary technology, ensuring that sustainability is not only a concept but a practical and achievable reality.

At Sevarex, we prioritize high-quality natural materials like hemp, clay, wood, and lime, all of which contribute to a balanced indoor climate. But beyond materials, our mission is to educate and inspire. We work closely with architects, builders, and homeowners, ensuring they understand the immense benefits of natural construction and how to implement it effectively. Our experience and exposure to successful sustainable building methods across Europe allow us to adapt best practices to the unique climate and cultural needs of Bulgaria. Sevarex is not just a business; it is a movement, an effort to reshape the way we think about living spaces and redefine sustainability for future generations.
How does building with natural materials improve everyday life?
The materials in our homes directly impact how we feel. Synthetic components trap heat, collect dust, and release chemicals that lower air quality, making spaces uncomfortable. Natural materials, on the other hand, create breathable, healthier environments that adapt to our needs.
Clay plaster regulates humidity by absorbing excess moisture and releasing it when needed, preventing mold and maintaining a balanced climate. Wooden surfaces and lime-based coatings improve air circulation and reduce bacteria buildup. Natural insulation like hemp and straw keeps homes warm in winter and cool in summer, cutting energy costs. Living in a home built with natural materials means fresher air, greater comfort, and a stronger connection to nature, benefiting both body and mind.

What challenges does the sustainable building industry face, and how is Sevarex addressing them?
The biggest challenge is the lack of skilled professionals trained to work with natural materials. That's why I co-founded the Institute for Ecological Construction, where we offer workshops and training programs to educate craftsmen and architects. By increasing awareness and providing education, we can accelerate the adoption of sustainable building practices.
Can you share a project that is particularly close to your heart?
One of the most meaningful projects for me was restoring a nearly 100-year-old house in the Rhodope Mountains, surrounded by untouched nature, far from city life. It was one of our first projects, making it even more special, as it set the foundation for many that followed. The house had been abandoned for years, yet its history and charm were undeniable. Our goal was to modernize it without erasing its essence.

Using clay plaster, wooden structures, and hemp insulation, we created a space that was energy-efficient, breathable, and deeply connected to its origins. Every material was chosen to preserve its authenticity while enhancing comfort and sustainability. The owner was not only impressed but emotionally moved by the transformation, feeling an even stronger connection to the home. Seeing an old structure come back to life through natural materials was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed my passion for sustainable building.
What is your vision for the future of sustainable construction?
Sustainable building is not a passing trend; it's a necessity. At Sevarex, we're proving that modern architecture and natural materials work hand in hand. As more people recognize the benefits, I believe we will see a shift towards healthier, more eco-friendly homes. The future belongs to those who prioritize sustainability – not just for themselves, but for generations to come.
