Pavlina Savova, founder, on achieving a feel of timelessness
A graduate from the Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy, Pavlina Savova opened her own studio, Sava Interior, in 2013. Her work has been shaped by her Italian education ever since, but in a subtle, delicate way. Instead of imposing a style or an aesthetic on the clients, Pavlina Savova is capable of using her broad culture to offer the interior ideas that will work best for the particular client. We talked to her to learn more.
How did your professional education at the Accademia Italiana affect you as a designer?
Accademia Italiana not only affected me – it formed me as a designer. It created a solid fundament on which I was eventually capable to build my own style and aesthetic. After these years, I realise that the atmosphere that the Accademia has created, along with its history and culture, help a lot in choosing the direction in which you want to develop further. If you experiment with styles and aesthetics, you always feel supported by the realisation that there are some core rules that do not change. And you can always use different approaches to create a good interior.

Do you see its influence on the interiors that you create?
Yes, it is visible in their sense of timelessness. They do not just reflect a trend or a fashion. They remain relevant for many years. This, in my opinion, is the most important thing in good design.

In some of your projects you explore the potential of the Japandi style. Why are you attracted to it? How do you decide whether the style will suit an interior and a client?
Japandi attracts me with its simplicity and functionality. I adore the easternmost part of the world because of its culture of perfectionism and attention to each, literally each detail. I like that it offers a harmonic alternative to our rushed everyday life and the overwhelming deluge of information, be it useful or not. I see that more people are getting interested in this style. Recently, we worked on an interior in the Wabi Sabi style, which is also influenced by the East. I was really surprised that during the conversations with the clients we chose this style. They were not aware that it existed, but this is my job – to understand what will suit best the people for whom I am creating the design.

I always put in the centre of the interior the people who are going to inhabit it. The interior is their reflection, a true addition to their lives and families. No-one will be capable of living well in an environment where they do not thrive.
